Top 5 Driving Distractions

25 Nov 2019, by Madiha Hanif in Auto Accidents, Distracted Driving, Texas Car Accident Statistics

What is distracted driving?
Distracted driving is when you something causes you to take your attention away from the road while driving a vehicle. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are three main categories of distracted driving:

  • Visual: taking your eyes off the road
  • Manual: taking your hands off the wheel
  • Cognitive: taking your mind off of driving

Below you can find the top 5 causes of distracted driving:

1. Cell phone usage
This is an obvious cause of distracted driving and we should all be aware that talking and texting while driving is bad.

2. Eating food
Besides the fact that eating food while driving is a major manual and cognitive distraction, you also have the danger of spilling the food. This is where most drivers look away and end up getting into accidents.

3. Other passengers
This involves talking to other passengers or other passengers doing things that distract you and take your attention away from driving.

4. Using an outside device
With the advancement of technology, there are a lot of outside devices that are available for you to implement with your car. Problem comes in when drivers end up distracting themselves when they are adjusting these devices.

5. Handling children or pets
Both children and pets can be distractions while you are driving. When kids are crying or talking to you it makes it tough to keep your full concentration on the road. It is always helpful to have another adult in the car that can help take care of them For pets, you can cut down on distractions by making sure your animal babies aren’t loose in the car.

Staying alert and focused while driving is important for your safety. Although many individuals are guilty of partaking in the actions listed above, it is up to us to start decreasing how often we drive distracted. Paying more attention while driving to and from your destination will increase your chances of having a smooth ride.
